The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of Connecticut will be coming to Watertown High School this year on March 12th, to present a program called Names Can Really Hurt Us for the sophomore class. A student and teacher will work together with a small group of sophomores to discuss the importance of tolerance, kindness, acceptance. Each year the ADL reaches thousands of people including students, teachers, parents, and community members. The ADL of CT reports that the, “ADL advocacy and programs focus on anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, extremism, hate crimes, civil rights, interfaith and inter-group understanding, and peace in the Middle East.” Various teachers and students are involved in this day-long program happening in March. One teacher, Mrs. Keugler, expresses how she, “thinks it’s really important to empower kids to not only be advocates for themselves, but for other people in the building, to try and make this a positive high school experience.” Mrs. Lewis, Library Media Specialist, is involved with the ADL this year and conveys that she, “thinks there’s always room for improvement in how we interact with each other,” and also says, “it helps us appreciate and understand each other. Everybody has some strengths and some weaknesses, and if you can learn to work with the people that aren’t like you it only makes you that much better.”
