By: Ryan Barnosky May’s Art Student of the Month is senior, Savanna Solla. Currently Savanna is in AP Art, but she’s taken various other art classes offered at WHS including: Art 1: Foundations in Art, Art 2 and 3: Photography, and Art 2,3, and 4: Drawing and Painting, and AP Studio Art for Drawing. Savanna says her favorite class to take is, “AP Art, because it has more freedom than other art classes.” Free drawing on her own is also much different than having guidelines required in most classrooms. For the most part Savanna thinks art will always be a hobby, but she’s not sure if it could be in her future career.
In her free time Savanna is a part of WHS’s girls volleyball and lacrosse team. She is still undecided on a college, but thinks Post University will be promising. And she also still isn’t sure what career path she is going to follow.

Outside of school, he plays basketball for the high school and enjoys photography. Congratulations Joshua, you're doing awesome work! By: Emily Gillotti Ty Zaccagnini has been chosen by the Science Department for February’s Junior Student of the Month. Ty says, “I’m flattered to be chosen because I really like science and I put a lot of effort into it.” The most interesting part about science for Ty, is working with chemicals. He also enjoys the math aspect of the subject. Ty has taken biology, chemistry and is now taking Physics as well as being a lab assistant. His favorite science experiment is the “Bag of Reactions Experiment” that mixes chemicals and inflates a plastic bag when it gets hot.
A study habit Ty recommends is to use mnemonic devices to help memorize criteria. For example, relating the first letter of a vocab word to something you are familiar with to help remember it. In Ty’s free time he enjoys playing soccer for Watertown High school and traveling. Ty considers himself a role model, because he is very motivating to underclassmen. Ty is unsure of where he wants to go to college exactly but he would want to major in neurology. By: Tim Heroux Mr. Hahn has chosen Cailin McGuire as the Featured Artist for April. Cailin was chosen because she is a very good leader and she has learned to play several instruments. She is even playing 4 instruments in the school musical, Grease. Cailin does a fantastic job in all of her music classes including, concert band, wind ensemble, pit orchestra, pep band, and AP music theory. Mr. Hahn, the high school Band Director, believes her best musical quality is that she has a lot of determination.
Cailin said she likes taking music classes because, “I like it’s ability to bring peace and stability in my life.” She also likes to know how music functions and what makes it work. She believes her best musical quality is that she doesn’t give up when trying to learn a new song or an instrument. She is most inspired by Ian Clarke, a flute composer, especially due to one of his pieces which is based on the sounds of the ocean that really pushes the limits of instruments. In the future, Cailin plans on majoring in music education to one day become a high school band director. By: Tim Heroux The Career and Technical Education department has chosen Jordan Arnold as the Senior Student of the Month for March. Jordan believes he received the award because he gives up his study halls to help students in lower Tech-Ed classes and he does wonderful in his classes. Throughout all four years that he has been at WHS, he has taken Video Production 1, 2, and 3 and is currently an editor on the yearbook where he does page design. Aside from these, he participates in a plethora of afterschool activities such as, Soccer, Indoor and Outdoor Track, LEO Club, Best Buddies, Interact Club, Link Crew, National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society, Superintendent Student Advisory Council, Board of Education Student Representative, and he is a Special Olympics Coach.
Jordan plans on attending UCONN, Storrs, where he will major in Mechanical Engineering. In his spare time he does photography, in which he photographs the highlights for our WHS sports as well as town sports for younger kids and even some businesses. Jordan started this because he, “Enjoyed capturing emotion and the memories that were made.” He is currently in the process of developing a design and layout for an app and a website where his photos can be accessed and find his business information. By: Ryan Barnosky The Career & Technical Education Department has chosen Cristian Welcome as the Sophomore Student of the Month. Cristian is currently in Personal Finance II and Marketing II. He describes these classes as, “Pretty interesting especially since I’d be using them in the future.” Cristian further stated, “Everything that you learn in personal finance is directly used as soon as you get out of high school.”
In these classes students gain knowledge about credit, budgeting, insurance, investment, merchandising, salesmanship, etc. It’s very helpful because, “They cover the basics, like things you’d experience in high school such as having a job and what to expect when you get a W-4,” says Cristian. Beside his academics and electives Cristian’s free time consists of participating in school sports. So far he’s done football and basketball, and in the spring he plans to go out for the Outdoor Track team. By: Mike Selkirk:
Jessica Stango was selected by the Career and Technical Education Department as the Junior Student of the Month, for March of 2020. She was flattered by the selection and said that it was definitely unexpected. Currently, she is taking Yearbook and Graphics at Watertown High and says she loves both the “creative freedom” and how “Yearbook uses the skills I learned in Graphics to design the pages.” As for Jessica’s free time, she likes to spend it working stage crew for the school’s performances, taking part in link crew and working at a daycare. Jessica also plays volleyball at Northwest YMCA and coaches fourth and fifth graders for the same sport. The skills learned in school have been used by Jess outside of the school environment as well. She has designed t-shirts for her volleyball team and loves seeing how the technical skills she knows can be used in the real world. Looking to the future, Jessica doesn’t know what she wants to study after high school but it will most likely involve environmental science or graphic design; and as of now her top choice for college is UConn where Jess hopes to one day play for their volleyball team. For some, art doesn’t mean much, but for Alixander Knight, it is his passion and takes up about 80-90 % of his week. He states, “Art is kind of the only thing I really do.” Alixander Knight is a senior at Watertown High School, throughout his years here he has taken Art 1, 2, 3 and is currently in AP Art. Alix says he has been into art since before he began talking, although Middle School is when he realized, “This is actually really fun to do and I can actually do this.” The main kind of art he does is digital art and when he is older he hopes to become an illustrator or animator. Outside of school, Alix is the vice president of SAGA, which is a diverse LGBTQ group. In his featured piece, “Dizziness” he was assigned to make a drawing based on the concentration fears, and phobias. The first thing he thought was people who are afraid of being dizzy. He wanted to do something that was difficult to look at, so he thought to do 3D lines. He believes that this piece is a representation of how everybody is afraid of something, and how no one knows what someone is afraid of. When starting this piece he states his initial thought was “Oh God this isn’t going to come out right.” He says he expected the art to flop because it was more advanced than what he was used to working with. Alix is also inspired by other artists’ like people in his class and photos he sees on Instagram. He thinks, “What can I take from this or what can I learn to do from this to put in my own stuff.” Regarding other artists, Alix shares that he has, “No favorites and thinks everybody is good and great in their own way.” |
